What Is Music Therapy?

Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program. (American Music Therapy Association, 2010)

Music therapy is a systematic process of intervention wherein the therapist helps the client to promote health, using music experiences and the relationships that develop through them as dynamic forces of change. (Bruscia, 1998)

About Discovery Music Therapy

The mission of Discovery Music Therapy is to provide space for clients to feel empowered, and find connection and meaning through music.

The word “discover” was chosen very purposefully for our name, and you may have noticed the symbol in our logo showing a box slowly opening and transforming into a music note. Participating in therapy can uncover knowledge or insights or possibilities that might have previously been unknown. Sharing music can deepen these connections and provide additional avenues for therapeutic growth.

Discovery: the action or process of discovering or being discovered; a person or thing discovered.
Discover: find (someone or something unexpectedly or in the course of a search; become aware of (a fact or situation).

We view clients as equal partners in the therapeutic process. Services are individualized to each client, putting that client’s goals for therapy first, and emphasizing their strengths and resources.
